Idiot. From Greek idiōtēs.

In Athens, it referred to a person who was only concerned with his private life and did not participate in public life, politics, or state affairs.

Since the Greeks considered it a civic duty to get involved in politics, the word came to have a negative connotation of being ignorant or uninterested.
